How appropriate with this current hostile administration to revisit this fabulous 1940 map from the David Rumsey map collection encouraging tolerance, diversity and immigration. We are a national of immigrants, as if we need a reminder!
In all the illustrations of the immigrants that appear on the map, I can't make out one rapist! In fact, everyone is depicted diligently working, as you'll see in the excerpt below (mostly in agriculture - it was 1940 after all - I wonder what today's immigrants would be doing? Coding, perhaps. Washing dishes, First Ladying, etc. )
You can purchase this map as a scroll on tear-proof, water-proof paper. This is an inexpensive way to bring an important historical reproduction into your home or office.
I am relieved that the immigration debate was raging 75 years ago enough to create this excellent piece of work. It was published by the New York City based Council Against Intolerance, which does not seem to exist today. If there are any modern depictions of immigrant maps that preach tolerance, please bring them to our attention: trip@mapisart.com
